Gyro’clock at the ASEE conference

Almost a year ago when I first started working on the Gyro’clock, My communications Instructor at the British Columbia Institute of Technology, Katherine Golder, told me about a Maker themed event that was planned for the Annual Conference of the American Society for Engineering Education in 2015. They were looking for people to come and present projects they work on that involves building things, you know, the kinda stuff we do. So I submitted my Gyro’clock as an entry and got the opportunity to go and demonstrate my project last week in Seattle!

There were 19 projects presented in total, and they were all unique and interesting. And it was great to get feedback from others about the Gyro’clock. I had an interactive setup, where they could see the centrifugal acceleration real time as I was spinning the Gyro’clock test unit. Also I brought along my old propeller clock to show the similarity and differences between it and the Gyro’clock.

As for my next steps, I am going to make the Gyro’clock into a real device that I can actually take with me when I go out. For this I have to make a PCB with surface mount components and also a suitable case for it. I have already gotten the components to build this more practical Gyro’clock. I will keep you updated as the work progresses.

The way you describe your projects and the amout of planning that went in to them is sure to capture the interest of non-physics and non-engineering majors like myself! Well done!! Keep it up!
